PortalDesk

A Windows desktop organizer that groups icons into zones without ever moving your files.

PortalDesk groups desktop icons into zones, shows folders as live folders and adds a clock. It does its job and stays out of the way.

A zone only changes where icons are shown — your files never move. If PortalDesk closes or crashes, every icon returns to its original position.

A live folder displays any folder right on the desktop — Downloads, Screenshots or a project. Image thumbnails load as you scroll.

Ctrl+D brings the zones above every window, and pressing it again returns them to the desktop without minimising anything; while the zones are shown, the window behind is dimmed.

Touching zones can be merged into one shape with a shared border. Each zone is styled on its own — icon size, labels, colours, opacity, corner radius and spacing — with a live preview, and a style can be saved as a template. Right-dragging on an empty desktop creates a new zone, live folder or clock; zones snap to an 8 px grid, and holding Alt places them freely.

Icons and label wrapping match native Windows. The display stays crisp at 100–200% scaling and works across multiple monitors with different scales. The site reports, from automated tests, under 2% of one CPU core at idle and under 100 MB of memory.

It runs on Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit), on your own PC, and collects no usage data. It is coming to Steam in Q4 2026; planned next are tabs in a zone, sorting for live folders and a list view.
